What's the best route to becoming vegetarian?

I’m 34 years old and overweight, yet active. (3 days a week). 15 years ago , I omitted beef, and a year ago pork.I eat only fish and chicken that’s organic, And I have no problem eating vegetables. I don’t drink coffee, I drink herbal tea only (no sugar added) nor do I add salt to my foods.

My goal is to lose 75 pounds in 2 years.

Those who are veg, am I on the right track?

Cutting out meat entirely isn’t really going to help you lose weight in itself. Best to cut out (or cut down) on starchy foods such as potatoes, bread, pasta etc. If you normally have sandwiches for lunch, change to salads instead (but watch out for dressings laden with calories).

Eating white meat and fish (grilled, not fried) is very good for you and won’t pile on the pounds. Try to avoid red meats (although a little in moderation won’t hurt if you are occasionally tempted). Avoid oily and greasy foods, especially takeaways. Avoid sugary foods too like cakes, cookies and chocolate. If you feel the need to snack in between meals, choose fruit.

Above all, make sure you have a varied balanced diet, drink 2 or 3 litres of water a day, do a little exercise each day (a 20 minute brisk walk does wonders), and you should see your excess weight gradually come off.

Remember, it’s not healthy to lose too much weight too quickly. Your goal sounds reasonable and sensible. Also remember that the first 10 pounds are easier to lose than the last 10, so don’t be tempted to try any drastic measures when you are nearing your goal.

Good luck, I’m sure you’ll succeed.

I’m a vegetarian coz i don’t like the taste of meat even tho my parents produce it. Alot of exercise and fruit & veg will soon shed the pounds. Don’t be to ambitious with the weight loss goal because fat will turn to muscle (as you are active) and muscle is denser then fat so it weighs more. Good luck and hope you shed those pounds.

If you do go vegetarian, read about combining foods to make a complete protein.

If your goal is weight loss, I don’t think that it will make a huge difference whether you eat some non-vegetarians items, like using chicken broth for your soups, or using gelatine.

Try using smaller portions of the meat you do eat. Make some whole grains, (brown rice, quinoa, barley), add some vegetable and lentils and just about 2 ounces of cooked chicken without skin per serving.

Many vegetarians get a lot of their protein from cheese and nuts, both high calorie choices.

75 pounds in two years sounds like a very reasonable goal. Just eat well, and the pounds will follow.

Also, make sure you eat breakfast, and don’t skip meals. Skipping meals lowers your metabolism, and you will lose more weight eating the same amount of food in five or six sessions that all at dinner.

Well cutting out beef and pork can be a good way to lose weight because you cut out fat. However, instead you could be eating a lot of carbs or large portions. Make sure you are not replacing meat with carbilicious foods. Instead replace with FRESH veggies. Here is a guide to vegetarisnism, to help you get on the right track. Being a veggie can be a good way to be healthy, but you must be smart about it.

i decided to be a veggie wen i was 12, because i disagreed with animal conditions and the idea of them being born to be killed and eaten
    (depressing stuff rite ?)
    ANYWAY
im technically a pescitarian because i still eat fish. so u could try that ?

the thing about being a veggie is u have to be careful that ur not eating bread and pasta and carbs to replace meat meals or u’ll just end up gaining weight.

also have u tried steaming ur food? like chicken and fish so its like the healthier option .

i hope u find this helpful, good luck ! (:

I’m 34 too! All sounds great with what you are doing. I’ve been vegetarian for 12 years and my transition to a meat-free/seafood free lifestyle happened during a 6-month period. So, what is holding you back from eliminating fish and chicken? Here, maybe these websites will help:

some good tips here. make sure to keep in mind there are those on here that predictably, for some reason, want to convince everyone that the health benefits (or any of the benefits) of vegetarianism/veganism that the scholars who have spent their lives researching these issues have found self-evident, are to be ignored. I’d wager the same people generally deny all the harmful effects our behaviours are having on our biosphere/environment, ourselves and our bodies, considering that this is one of the most detrimental.
commercial chicken can actually be even more fatty. humans are in the PRIMATE family, all that surfeit tract gets clogged w/ these dead animal fats. not even getting into all the injected chemicals/fats and the viruses/bacterias (consider the conditions of factory farms) one is exposed to. make sure to do some research. there are many great resources for a healthy diet. could begin with the search engine.
(can also give you plenty of info on all the other important reasons to go veg. if you’re interested.)

I recently became a vegetarian. And what made me a vegetarian was reading a lot of books on how they process the meat.(Like the germs and feces that gets on the meat.)It totally made me take the plunge toward vegetarianism. So first you need to decide if its the weight loss goal or actually wanting to become a vegetarian. If it is both. Vegetarian needs to be a the top. Because that alone will help you reach your weight loss goal and make you feel like a better person inside and out. After your a vegetarian your body will naturally be the size it needs to be healthy. But it sounds like you are on the right track. Good luck:)

Here is a very good book about being a vegetarian and maximum weight loss. This author and his wife have great vegan cookbooks out as well. You should read this book to get an idea if this will work for you:
“The McDougall Program For Maximum Weight Loss” by Dr. John McDougall.
