I have really wanted to become a vegetarian for a while now, but I want to be informed about, for example, if i should take vitamin supplements, and other things like that. Can anyone give me some information from personal experience, or point me towards a helpful website? thank you!
btw, i’m 16, i don’t know if that helps or not.

There isn’t much to it. I think a lot of people make it into a much bigger deal than it really is. Unless you are a huge meat eater, cutting meat abruptly out of your diet won’t be a problem. I haven’t used any supplements, although I do drink some fruit booster drinks a couple times a week. Ever heard of Naked Juice? They taste amazing and offer lots of health benefits. I like them just because of the protein and the extra ingredients I might not be getting in my regular fruits and veggies. I would drink these even if I wasn’t a vegetarian, so they are not necessary…but I do like to let people know about them.
Also remember that a vegetarian doesn’t eat gelatin either, which is found in some chewy candies (think Starburst), some yogurt, jello, etc. Just read the ingredients.
If you are a strict vegetarian (and you can set your own boundaries, by the way, there isn’t a rule book), but avoid anything with chicken/beef stock. That means no chicken noodle soup, no ramen noodles. You’ll need to make sure that anything you eat (even when you go out) is not cooked in any sort of animal juice.
There’s really nothing to it! Just make sure you’re getting the right assortment of fruits, veggies, grains and protein each day! Let me know if you have any more questions, you can message me. Good luck!
that vegans are overly sensitive. Not just to foods that might have some chicken broth or dairy but to EVERYTHING!
as long as u eat a balanced diet …the only supplement u should need is b12..i use flax seed to get tht ..flax also has omega fatty acids in it ..
i would suggest maybe buying a few cookbooks ..and maybe getting one like ..vegetarian diet for dummies or something along those lines..to help u understand the veg food pyramid ..and what foods are rich in say iron and protein ..
…make sure u pay attention to those hidden animal ingredients too..like ..gelatin ..rennet…whey..casein ..and more lol ..its kinda tricky at first ..
and im not pushing here..just saying ..tht the dairy industry is as cruel if not more cruel then the meat industry..so maybe u might even think about going vegan ..its really not tht hard once u get used to it ..
..gl with going veg
haha euphoric ..thanks for tht link..ive been vegan for 3 yrs..and i like ..found out stuff i didnt know lol ..
I do like to believe I am sensitive to cruelty. No problem with that.
Honestly the best way is to start phasing things out slowly. Start by not eating red meat and pork, then not eating chicken/turkey, then fish. Increase your consumption of beans, lentils, and other meat "replacements." Buy some soy meat replacements that will help the transition, like veggie burgers and chick’n. Learn what veggies contain, including things like iron, B vitamins, and calcium.
Take the time to learn what quality food is. A great resource is something like greenleafy.org, where there is a cute chart with all the vitamins and minerals and what veggies help supply it.
But honestly, if you eat a varied vegetable based diet you will have the nutrients you need. Take a B12 every once in awhile as a supplement, as this isn’t as readily available in plants as it used to be.
you should know that if you become a vegetarian, that you cant eat meat. and that means that you cant eat big macs and if you cant eat big macs you might as well kill yourself.
Here’s a great website for getting started on a veg diet: http://www.vrg.org/
They have all sorts of articles about how to be a healthy vegetarian (or vegan), plus recipes, info on hidden animal ingredients, etc. You have to decide for yourself, based on knowing your own personality, whether you should drop meat all at one or wean yourself off slowly. It’s like getting into cold water step-by-step or jumping in all once; I think the optimal approach varies among people.
If you make sure to eat a well-balanced diet based on vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, and nuts, you really shouldn’t have to worry about taking vitamins (especially if you’re still going to eat eggs and dairy). The only vitamin vegans sometimes have trouble getting is B12, but almost all soymilk and cereal is fortified with it, so even that isn’t a big deal. Also, people may try to harass you about getting enough protein. Don’t listen to them; most Americans get too much protein, and you can get more than enough from a balanced vegetarian diet.
I also hesitate to recommend using a lot of meat-replacement products right away. First of all, they’re expensive and pretty processed, so definitely not as healthful as whole foods. Second, if you’re expecting them to taste like meat you’ll probably just be disappointed. Some of the chicken replacements are decent, but most veggie burgers taste nothing like meat.
16 is a fine age for becoming vegetarian; don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too young. I know people who became vegetarian in elementary school and they turned out just fine.
first of all there is a difference between vegans and vegetarians. vegans dont eat meat, or eggs or cheese or any dairy products or anything that comes from an animal.
vegetarians just dont eat meat, some eat eggs some dont…personal choice. I myself, have been a vegetarian for 4.5 years. They have tons of supplements at well known grocery stores now, so you dont have to have a void on your plate..but they are not the same in healthy nutrients. You will most likely need to take an iron pill because without meat you could become anemic…also if you arent getting enough protein from the alternatives part of the meat and alternatives you will need some kind of protein pill…
you cna get tasteless powders to put in drinks and what not, its tasteless and you will never know its there.
umm..thats all i can think of right now . .
also things like marshmellows, jello, gummy candy all have gelatin in them which i smade from animal bones soo thats something to think about as well.
I’d leave a long speech but i’m eating…so I’d just say make sure you get your B12′s…you can buy Nutritional Yeast and eat that, or you can get Alive! Ultra Shake and drink that [that thing is a blessing in a powder form..make SURE you buy that!!], and some other sources. For your Omegas, take Flax and Hemp. For your proteins..everything you eat will have protein so that’s not even an issue. Aminos, Alive Ultra Shake has all of them [ess/non-ess] OR you can get Bragg Liquid Aminos…it’s natural product made out of soybeans and purified water, tastes like soysauce but lighter and it naturally has all the amino’s [ess/non ess] in it. Make sure you chew or eat a ginger candy every now and then so you don’t get super gassy. Even if not much at all, make sure you eat some fruits and veggies daily or every few days. And out of all things, DON’T LIVE ON THOSE FROZEN/PROCESSED VEGETARIAN JUNK! I foolishly did that for half a year and my body hated the heck out of me.
