What Do Vegetarians, Vegans Eat?

Most people who call themselves vegetarians do not eat the flesh of any animal, but may eat eggs and dairy products. Vegans do not eat animal products of any kind including dairy, eggs, honey, gelatin or other animal derived products.

The new food groups for vegans include whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes, nuts and other protein foods.

Protein is no longer difficult to get from a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Vegetarians have a variety of great food choices. Many of them are just slight variations on old favorites, like pasta with tomato sauce, bean burritos, tacos, tostadas, pizza, macaroni, stir-fry, veggie burgers, “not dogs” and beans and rice, just to name a few.

The freezer sections of most super markets carry an assortment of vegetarian convenience foods and meals.

There are also many sandwich fillings that do not contain meat and many products that do not contain dairy in today’s supermarkets.

Ethnic meals and entrees abound: Indian, Thai, Mexican, Italian, Chinese and Mediterranean.

And, of course, both vegans and vegetarians eat lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Times have really changed and most restaurants have one or more vegetarian items on their menus.

Most cities have restaurants that are all vegetarian or vegan.
