The development of a self-righteous, holier-than-thou attitude with a concomitant need to impose your values on others.

There are other mental aberrations as well but you won’t notice them because you will be soooooooo right.

being pretentious is a general side affect of veganism. or maybe its a cause.

You might gain some weight from all the carbs you’ll be eating.

  13. Caro says:

    you will get fat…

  14. mexi_angel25 says:

I don’t think there is any side effects as long as you get the right amount of protein and nutrients ( ie. beans have a lot of protein) you should be more than fine

  15. A. Roman says:

not much really. you just need to get the nutrients that you get from meat or eggs. If I were you I’d still eat dairy. It’s hard to get a substitute for dairy. (well, theres brocoli but NO)
You can get legumes as substitute for meat.

  16. I'M ON A DIET!!!!! says:

if you dont get those extra nutrients from somewhere else you may get sick. i dont know what will happen to you, though.
you do know that becoming a vegan also means not using anything that is made from animals (leather, wool…) or be apart of any events that exploit animals (circus, rodeos…)?
know what you’re getting yourself into, take it one step at a time, dont just jump into being a vegan or you will give up too quickly.

    good luck!
    :)

    You gain skin complexion!

However, you lessen your growth. You will not grow talller anymore! So boys don’t want to be a vegan!

lack of iron in ur diet is not a good thing, if u dont eat at least some type of meat or vege with iron, later on in life u will have a blood deficientcy and may have to have blood transfusions, thats if it gets to that lol

i was a vegetarian for a little over a year for the first 3 to 4 months everything was ok but then i got sick i was always tired i had no energy etc. the DR’s told me it was b/c my body needed iron and the iron pills did not work, they told me that red meat has the iron that my body need so i had to go back to eating a pice of red meat once a week and i was always hungry when i was vegetarian

also it was weird when i was vegetarian i got heavyer then i was when i ate meat and i was a healty vegetarian i ate lots of pastas and veggies not a lot of junk garbbage food

  21. Lauren J says:

If you aren’t REALLY careful about what you eat, you could end up with low iron. You have to know what you are doing and probably should talk to a nutritionist, one who agrees with veganism and isn’t going to tell you how terrible it is.
If you cut out too much oil, your hair could go flat and your skin might get dry because the average American diet has fat in mass amounts that make our hair greasy, I mean silky. Ha.
You will probably loose weight (if you do it right), your digestive tract will probably start off giving you a lot of problems, but then even out and be healthier than ever.
However, ignore the above if you stick to french fries and processed foods.
Oh yah, you will have more energy, be happier, more at peace, doing something great for yourself and the world.
The worst part is that it is practically impossible to find something to eat at the average restaurant and you will need to not only find some veggie places nearby but also get your friends and significant other to want to go there with you.

  22. slavetofashion69 says:

Protein is the problem with a meat and dairy-less diet. You can get it from supplements and vegetable-based sources like beans and nuts.

If you’re serious about it, it can be a healthy choice, but you have to be very careful about planning your meals to make sure you’re getting all of your nutritional requirements. You will probably have to make and follow a meal plan.

Eating vegetables is good for you of course, but most people here in North America are not raised that way. It’s going to be a lot of work for you to learn an entirely new style of cooking. Of course, you could just boil or steam everything, but that would probably get old fast… if you like cooking, then it’s probably not such a chore.

I guess the worst problem for me would be missing meat! lol I love it and I would always, always be tempted. What’s the point of putting such strict controls on yourself when the benefit isn’t equal to the cost?

Being a vegan is healthy, when you’re eating properly. But then so is eating a balanced diet from all food groups. Many other factors affect health as much, if not more, such as stress and physical activity levels.

  23. Jezebel says:

Vegan is a lifestyle, not a diet. If you don’t have the ethics behind it, you wouldn’t be vegan.

You mean you’re deciding whether you should be a strict vegetarian or a lacto-vegetarian.

So essentially, you want to know the pros and cons of dairy.

    http://www.milksucks.com
    http://www.notmilk.com

Cow’s milk is breastmilk for baby cows. It’s mucus forming. It congests you. It causes acne. It’s carcinogenic. It messes with your hormones. It leaches minerals from your bones to digest it, promoting osteoporosis (research: phosphorus and calcium in dairy.) …. there’s nothing healthy about it.

  24. smartyness says:

anemia, alienation from friends and family, not being able to go out to eat anywhere but pita pit and booster juice, preachyness, dumb bumper stickers, bad hair, skin, nail, terrible gas just to name a few

  25. gwenieviere says:

You will be fine, if you find alternatives to meat such as nuts and other protein substitutes, what i found happened to me was that i had a bit less energy and my immune system became very vulnerable, but after exercise and vitamin c, i’m alright. good luck =^^=

  26. veggietx says:

I’ve been a vegan for a few years (and vegetarian for many years before that.) When I eliminated dairy from my diet I was hungry for about two weeks. After that I realized how much more energy I have. I look younger and leaner. The thing is to not eat lots of processed crap. I mean vegans can technically eat french fries and sprite. But is it good for you? Eat fresh fruits and veggies, complex carbs and whole grains. Be aware of your calcium and iron intake. I only take supplements if I feel like I am getting a cold or if there is a nasty bug going around. I haven’t been to the doctor for an illness in over a decade. Buy the book Becoming Vegan, it has all of the information you need in order to be happy, healthy and smarter about your diet than all of these people telling you to eat steak.

  27. Glenn B says:

Listen to the people who are telling you this is not a choice to be taken lightly. This is truly a lifestyle and not just a way of eating. Just because there’s no god per se don’t kid yourself into imagining veganism is not a religion, it is quite possibly one of the ultimate forms of modern Humanism out there.

  28. Krister says:

Depending on who you are and where you live, you may spend too much time laughing due to people’s ignorant comments.

This is especially true when it comes to this forum.

  29. Spiderman 4 says:

Your skin should be a bit clearer, without all the hormones and saturated fats in animal flesh and dairy products.

Your levels of bad cholesterol should go down dramatically.

Your hair may go a little brittle if you don’t make sure you’re getting the right minerals and amino acids.

Providing you eat a balanced diet, you’ll look healthier overall.

  30. veganarkismo says:

Honestly, what were you expecting when you asked this question?

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that you want to be vegan. Most of the asshole omnis here are just defensive. I say stick to your guns, don’t take any sh*t from anyone. Prepare for a lot more of it, it’s the result of being vegan in a speciecist world.

To those who called us pretentious: It’s easier to ridicule people who are actually trying to make a difference in this world than do something yourself.

One effect of veganism (I’ve heard) is that "other bodily secretions" (lol) of vegans taste better and vegans generally get it up easier.

Now without sounding vitriolic, I’ll respond to one response that really pissed me off:

@slavetofashion69: You have NO IDEA what you’re talking about. That "protein" line is so overused and is rooted in the western culinary idea of meat=protein.
Vegans have no problem getting all essential amino acids as long as we eat a variety of foods that includes legumes. If all you eat is coke and chips (which is technically vegan), of course you’re going to get a protein deficiency! It has nothing to do with veganism, it’s poor nutrition.

Protein is not a problem in a vegan diet, B12 is. You can get enough B12 by either growing your own vegetables or taking a supplement.
