Making tofu tasty or even edible is easier than what you think. Here’s a simple recipe that you can use and it doesn’t involve any marinating. You can make variations by adding your own ingredients or even leaving some of them out.
Ingredients:
1 500g block of tofu
cooking oil
1 small onion
a few cloves of garlic
small amount of chopped spring onion and chopped celery
a few mushrooms
2 medium sized tomatoes
1 teaspoonful sambal oelek (crushed Spanish peppers)
1 teaspoonful turmeric powder
1 vegetable stock cube
2 teaspoonfuls ketjap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce)
Instructions:
Wash the tofu and cut it into medium size slices.
Heat the oil then fry the slices on both sides in the oil until slightly brown but not hard.
Remove the tofu, then fry the onions and garlic, followed by the spring onion, celery, tomatoes and mushrooms, later the sambal and turmeric.
Stir well whilst frying. Meanwhile chop the fried tofu into cubes and prepare vegetable stock with minimum amount of boiling water.
Add the vegetable stock and return the tofu to the mixture, add the ketjap manis and continue to cook for 10 mins.
Serve with basmati or similar rice. Serves 2-4 persons.
An interesting variant is to stir fry some green vegetables e.g. paksoi (bok choy) with the mixture.
