I have an extensive history of bipolar disorder, but since I became vegan, I have noticed that I am always in a good mood. What are your thoughts on this?

Mine has!
I think its cause of lots of reasons; food affects your mood more than people think, and when you eat healthy, fresh, unprocessed foods, your likely to have more energy, feel ‘lighter’, less ‘gluggy’ and just have a general calm, content aura.
Another reason going vegan is likely to make you feel happier is because like the first person said, you feel proud that your not supporting filth like animal cruelty, and you are able to relate to animals more genuinely and you start to respect yourself more.
Yes
My mood is alot better than when I ate meat. It could be because you feel happy and less guilty about not eating animals or that you eat more veggies and fruits, in my opinion.
I’ve read that consuming animal protein contributes to a lot of ill health, including some of the more common cancers like breast, prostate and colon cancer. Also, animals that are reared for meat are fed a lot of hormones and antibiotics to keep them "healthy" (i.e not dead from the horrific conditions they have to endure) and these will still be present in the meat that people consume which surely can’t do you any good.
I agree with the other answerers aswell, now that you aren’t contributing to a cruel and corrupt industry you probably feel a weight has been lifted and you have something positive to focus your energies on.
Good luck with both your Veganism and your health issues, your insights may be of interest to others who are bi-polar so spread the word.
My mood has most definatley improoved. I am no longer in a bad mood at work and i love people more. My boss loves how happy i am all the time. They say you are what you eat, and its true. You eat food that is good for you, and your body becomes healthier. The healthier it is, the less it has to work to process things and keep you functioning. A better mood and more energy can be a result.
No. I found my mood much the same.
I’ve been vegan for around 15 years. At one point during those years I was treated for depression. I am NOT suggesting the two are linked, they are not.
And external factors that have affected my mood, long and short term, are of course no less devastating – unemployment, bereavement, serious illness.
@ Tuskalina – what you have read is wrong. There is known or suspected ink between breast cancer and animal products; a diet high in dairy is thought to be a possible risk factor for prostate cancer, and a diet HIGH in red and processed meat is a known risk factor for colorectal cancers. A diet high in red and processed meats is also thought to possibly increase the risk of stomach cancer. A diet that excludes meat obviously reduces the risk of these cancers, but a diet that includes meat but excludes or severely restricts red and processed meat offers the same degree of protection.
A diet high in meat and fat may possibly, it is thought, increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.
That’s about it for any known or suspected connection between animal products and the 200+ diseases that come under the umbrella title of cancer.
I’ve had breast cancer as a vegan and I’ve met a number of other vegans with cancer.
It doesn’t really do us any favours when we make unsubstantiated claims for the health benefits of veganism
Nope, due to my vegan diet I have had constant personality and mood changes. But at least I am saving animals, right?!
In adults, typical deficiency symptoms include loss of energy, tingling, numbness, reduced sensitivity to pain or pressure, blurred vision, abnormal gait, sore tongue, poor memory, confusion, hallucinations and personality changes. Often these symptoms develop gradually over several months to a year before being recognized as being due to B12 deficiency and they are usually reversible on administration of B12. There is however no entirely consistent and reliable set of symptoms and there are cases of permanent damage in adults from B12 deficiency. If you suspect a problem then get a skilled diagnosis from a medical practitioner as each of these symptoms can also be caused by problems other than B12 deficiency.
YES!! I used to be pretty grumpy and never in a good mood but since I stopped eating meat I have felt happy and giddy and I’ve been having a lot more fun. I’ve also been nicer to the people around me.
I’m bipolar, too, and I’m in the process of becoming a vegetarian. (Kudos on being a vegan, I don’t have the willpower to give up ice cream!)
Although I’m happy for the most part, I’ve also been feeling weak a lot and I’ve become anemic. I need to figure out how to make good protein shakes, or something.
