My cousin’s son is not naturally keen on eating meat and i am concerned that the poscute of trying to feed him meat could have some psychological effect on him. Is a natural feeling of vegetarianism in childhood possible and what sort of help is there about the subject matter.

If you show a really young child a piece of fruit/veg or a chunk of meat they will almost definitely go for the fruit/veg. Children are actually taught to eat meat so I think it’s a good thing he wants/is naturally leaning towards a vegetarian diet. I think it would be cruel to force him to eat meat so stick to a veg one… provided you do it right, he will grow up into a much healthier person.

I hear a lot of children don’t like meat at first, just give him what he likes to eat. Maybe at 3 or 4 he will eat meat. Try dicing up a hot dog (very small to avoid choking). I also hear it’s nothing to worry about either.
Good for him, you do not need to eat animal flesh to grow up strong and healthy. So long as he has an overall balanced diet he will do fine.
The human body craves certain foods for a reason because it needs nutrients from that food. Each persons body is different and it could be that he is craving nutrients found in vegetables more than meat.
No, human nature is to be omnivorous, we have all the necessary tools to do it (incisors and molars).
Some kids just don’t like meat. Don’t force him to eat it, but find a meat he DOES enjoy. I recently lived with a 2 year old that refused to eat meat… I think that’s just how it is with kids, they’re starting to express their independence.
As an Omni, you may be surprised how I answer this – basically don’t push it.
My daughter was exactly the same, as was my sister. Both have now well grown up with my sister eating limited meat, my daughter is Vegan.
As parents we always gave her the option of a meat portion but never pushed the matter if she didn’t eat it.
You can always give the lad veggies only and let him decide if he wants a portion of meat – you often find that as soon as they think they are missing out they will ask for some.
As long as they are growing properly and gaining weight all should be well.
Well I became a vegetarian before I started school (age 4) and was raised by the children of farmers so I defiantly know that it was not because of their influence that I am a vegetarian. I don’t think you should seek help if my farmer grandparents accepted it I’m sure your cousin can. The same thing happened to a family friends child so it is perfectly natural and can be healthy.
A vegan diet is very natural and if a child is given a choice, that child will choose a fruit or vegetable over a piece of rotting animal flesh any day.
Which types of meat have you tried as there are many different kinds. You might find he dislikes beef but quite likes lamb for example as they are very different tastes and textures. Have you tried using minced meat say in a lasagna or a cottage pie? Or will he eat a ham sandwich as a snack? That isn’t force feeding him meat, its giving him the choice and opportunity to try things
I disagree with the people who say that you should just give him what he likes. That’s how kids get hooked on junk food and rubbish. Every time I watch something like Supernanny on TV you see kids that refuse to eat anything other than chips because their parents let them eat nothing but what they wanted / liked when they were younger so dont go down that road.
To say he doesn’t like meat is a broad statement as there are many different types and literally millions of recipes you can use them in.
It may just be that he simply doesn’t like it but you or your cousin cant reach that conclusion until you have explored a few more avenues.
EDIT. The statement above was once used by none other than Adolf Hitler!
Fair play to the child. I would pick fruit over a piece of rotting flesh too, but if you were to offer me a piece of fresh meat that was freshly cooked and tasty. I would pick that
Im not sure…when i was eight i watched my mother preparing a turkey at xmas and i refused to eat meat from then on…im 17 now and when people ask me why im a veggie i can never really answer because i barely remember turning vegetarian!! My mum tried to make me eat it at first but i just cried…lol no idea…so dont push ur kid into eating it…anyway hes only 2 so his taste could change in no time xox
When my daughter was small, she would put the meat from her dinner in her mouth , give it a chew and then put it on the side of her plate, not swallow it. After a while she just wouldn’t even touch it. She is now in her 30′s, and a vegan. We made no big deal about, just slowly checked out the ingredients on the food packets, as she cut out different thing as she got older. There are plenty of books and web sites on what to eat not using meat, she has travelled all over the world, and is happy and healthy, that’s the most important thing.
