Is it true that people often gain weight after becoming a vegetarian?

I stopped eating meat and fish about 4 months ago and people warned me that I would most likely gain weight because I would be eating a lot more carbs. Do you have any personal experience with this or know something about what i’ve heard? Thanks in advance.

Its possible to gain or loose weight depending on what you eat. Its all about maintaining a balanced diet. Try checking out the vegan or vegetarian food pyramid so that you have a guide. http://www.veganfoodpyramid.com/ http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/medical/IM02769

People who are afraid of carbs are misinformed. There are good carbs like the carbs found in fruits and whole grain breads, and then there are bad carbs found in things like potato chips, candy, cake and french fries. The whole point of being vegetarian, to me, is to eat healthier. The only way you will gain weight by going vegetarian is if you sit around and eat a bunch of Sout Patch Kids and french fries all day. I have been vegetarian as well as vegan before, and I most definitely can guarantee you did not gain weight by making these diet changes. In fact, I lost weight. Some believe that consuming meat and dairy products actually make you gain weight because of the high animal fat content, presevatives and antibiotics used to treat the animals before slaughter cause weight gain and illness. ok so whole grains are as bad as table sugar. basically, dont eat crap that isnt’ meat and call yourself a vegetarian/vegan.

Yes, you will get REALLY fat.
    I’m kidding, I’m kidding..
Carbs are bad for you, but um..
You should eat meat.. its delicious.
I wish they made a meat bun so I could have meat on my meat and dairy sandwich.

If you are a HEALTHY vegetarian, you will most likely lose weight. Being healthy means not overeating dairy, egg, and bread products to replace meat. If you do this, you will gain weight of course. But if you eat more fruits, vegetables, and meat substitutes (Tofurky is great, as well as Boca products) then your weight will not increase. It’s that simple.

yeah generally they do because in order to make vegetarian (and especially vegan) cuisine taste good, it has to be in fattening sauces or fried etc.

no, not all people gain weight upon becoming vegetarian. however, body composition changes when you switch to a vegetarian diet. in particular, most vegetarians lose a lot of muscle mass due to the low-calorie, low-protein diets they’re forced into, but gain a lot of fat due to the high levels of carbohydrates.

350zchick is incorrect. in particular, whole grain bread is not a "good" carb. the carbs in whole grain bread are exactly the same as the carbs in french fried potatoes – long chains of starch which are quickly and efficiently broken down by the body into sugar and dumped into your bloodstream. this causes your body to produce insulin, and insulin helps make you fat. "whole grain" products like bread sometimes produce a faster insulin response than eating raw table sugar. note that vegan diets are usually very rich in these fast-digesting, fattening carbohydrates and deficient in protein and fat.

eating vegetarian is just like eating an omnivore’s diet in that if you eat more calories than you expend then you will gain weight.
