Becoming a vegetarian is very good for you, I became one at 12.

I think that you should talk to your doctor, just to be safe

NO. Anyone who tells you otherwise is WRONG. I guarantee you will get enough protein. If you eat your greens, your overall nutritional level will put the protein-nuts to shame.

And yes, as a general rule, you should always discuss diet changes with your doctor, as they can tell you if you have certain conditions which will change your "ideal" diet.

On the other hand, I’d caution you to take what your doctor tells you about general nutrition with a gallon of salt. After all, Robert Atkins was a doctor.

No. Just once a week maybe eat some steak, or burger. You don’t even have to eat the whole thing, just to keep you from not getting enough meat. You do need some meat sometimes. So in my opinon it is ok. But when you do, eat many veggies, fruit and other health food. Becoming a vegetarian is kind of like a responsibility, because of being 13 (ok, I’m 13 too, but just still read it) it could take a while for your immune system to adapt, unless already you haven’t eaten alot of meat. You should be very fine, as long as you keep a balenced diet of fruit, veggies and protein. Oh, and you really don’t have to talk to a doctor. That really wouldn’t matter if you saw a doctor or not. (Plus they might do some weird tests…) So I hope you find this usefull! =)

Dangerous – YES. Unhealthyl – possibly. At age 13, One’s body is continuing to grow – not just your arms & legs but also your skin, internal organs & brain. Strengthening of your immune system to combat illness & infection is dependent on protein. Protein provide the nutrients that are vital for proper growth & deficiencies will do harm which can not be corrected later in life.

Become a vegan later in life when you have learned more about your body & have the strength in the immune system to at least slow the imbalance. It is always better to make informed decisions. At 13, you really do not have enough info to do that.

No, it is not a bad idea. I went vegetarian at your age and learned everything myself through experience and doing research and I was fine. If you go to a doctor there is a risk that they may advise against it depending on the doctor’s personal opinions because they are not very informed about a vegetarian diet. I would reccommend going to a nutritionist instead.

I think it’s great that you want to become a vegetarian. No, it’s not dangerous. Make sure you round out your diet with grains/carbs, protein, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. Thanks for going veg!

  8. tonksloopy says:

    no it’s not.

if it were unhealthy than many of the people who grew up in a vegetarian household would have serious health issues later in life after their teen years….but you don’t hear about that now do you?

just eat what you’re supposed to and you’ll be fine :)

Talk to a doctor, or dietitian to be sure. It’s not really dangerous.. it’s not as healthy than if you were to try to fit in meat once a week, and red meat once or twice a month… but it’s probably a lot healthier than eating meat every day.

The younger in life you eliminate all the steroids and other hormones given to cattle, the better. If anything, the age of 13-18 is when its most important not to be eating all those hormones.

I became a vegetarian when I was five, and I’m perfectly healthy. You may want to talk to a doctor about it, though, or do some research, just to get some basic ideas about nutrition.

I’m sure this advice will be controversial, but I suggest waiting until you are older. The reason being, a lot of people who go veggie at an early age make bad food decisions like eating a ton of bread and pasta, basically because of lack of research and because their parents aren’t supportive and they don’t have access to anything else. If your parents are okay with this and will buy you nutritious foods and a good variety of foods, and you do ALOT of research before you start this, go ahead. If they aren’t in on this, it will be hard to get a variety of foods and you will be stuck eating things that aren’t that nutritious. It’s a little easier when you’re 16-17 and have your own car and own money to buy your own foods if necessary. My advice, either way you do it is to make sure you eat a variety of foods. Many people when they’re first starting out eat way too much bread, pasta, soy, and dairy. These are common allergens. I developed severe intolerance and allergies to dairy and gluten after I went very low fat vegetarian as a teen. It wasn’t until many years later and a lot of health problems later that I discovered what was going on. I can’t even have so much as a bread crumb without getting really sick. If I had known how dangerous it was to eat too much bread and pasta as a teen I would have really limited it. Eat a lot of sources of grains, not just wheat. Also eat brown rice, beans, quinoa. Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Limit soy and dairy as well. They create health problems too if you eat too many of them. Good luck!

Becoming a vegetarian is never unhealthy. Anyone who tells you otherwise is simply ignorant. The only thing you will be missing out on from meat is protein, and if you eat just a few almonds a day that will cover 100% of your protein needs.

Edit: However, yes, the person who mentioned eating too much bread and pasta is correct. You need a balanced diet for it to work. However the same can be said for diets that include meat. I know far too many Americans where all they eat are meat and potatoes. That will kill you, literally. You will die with 75 pounds of undigested meat in your colon, and trust me, you don’t want that.

    totally fine.

you don’t need to talk with a doctor, either. Hindu children are typically veggies their whole lives (as Well as in japan where minimal red meat is consumed and no dairy).

  16. mr. scorpio says:

like i said before, its only bad if you do not meet your daily nutritional needs.
