I’m thinking of becoming a vegan, does anyone have any advice/recipes/tips for the transition of me please?

Am I able to eat fish? Is it easy to find vegan alternatives to many foods?

    Sorry, but if you continue to eat fish, you will neither be a vegetarian nor a vegan.

    To begin, vegetarians eat no dead animals. Vegans eat no dead animals, don’t wear the skins of dead animals, don’t use non-food products that were made with animal ingredients and don’t eat products that came from or were made by animals.

    If you are new to this, you may want to begin as a vegetarian. This is the best way to start because you can gain knowledge and fill the voids in your diet taken out by meat. You could also still eat dairy and eggs in this stage. If your concern is animal cruelty, then veganism would be your ultimate goal, but it often takes people many years to get there if they are going to do it right and stay veg for life.

    You can’t eat any animal products if you are a vegan – even milk and cheese are out of the picture.

    I suggest that you go to the website of the vegetarian society (see below) and do your research very carefully. You need to understand about getting the correct nutrition. Perhaps you could explore being a veggie before you become a fully fledged vegan. Good luck!

    when being a vegan…your not allowed to eat any meat, your not even allowed to eat dairy produtcs. the only things your allowed to eat are fruit and vegetables ONLY. but you can try experimenting different fruits and vegetables and make some of your own recipes.

    What are your reasons? That’s the question you should ask yourself. I don’t think it’s a very healthy lifestyle, vegans look ill to me and they’re a pain in the ar$e if you’re entertaining people or eating out.

    You are an omnivore, your body is designed to function at it’s best with a combination of meat, diary and plant matter in your diet. If you become vegan you cut out two of these major food groups. In the short term it will make you very ill, in the long term who knows. Cows have 4 stomachs to cope with a vegetarian diet, rabbits have an enlarged appendix you have neither of these things. Eat a balanced diet.

    We need various nutrients to stay healthy, you need to learn the nutritional values of different foods. You combine them to make a healthy diet.
    You also need to learn different cooking skills.
    Its probably easiest to do this gradually. If you find it too hard then just don’t do it, and concentrate on eating healthily instead.

    no you cannot eat fish, maybe you need to just cut the fish from your diet, the meat too, then be a vegetarian, and see if you like it. a vegan cant eat eggs , cheese, or drink milk, eat honey, dairy yoghurt, etc.and caine7 or whatever you are, have you always been a numpty?or is it due to high levels of cholesterol in the blood?and mcrgirl..its just untrue that you can only eat fruits and vegetables.bread and rice, cous cous, etc, are all ok. yours aint a bad answer though.churie, its you thats the pain in the rectum dear, with your condemnation of people wanting to eat vegetables instead of meat.

    How can you just decide to become a vegan? Its not like saying what clothes shall I put on today?You must be crazy,my partners a vegetarian and it causes so many problems with his health and the rest of it

    I suggest taking small steps at first instead of just telling yourself one day that you are vegan. It will help your body cope better.

    As for me, I started with only cutting red meat out of my diet. Gradually, I then stopped eating all meat except fish. I expect to eventually stop eating fish as well one day. The main problem with fish (beyond ethical reasons) is that their bodies retain pollution easily so much of the fish in the US contains toxins and is probably unsafe to eat.

    Start small, you don’t have to make huge changes from one day to the next. Also if you do this, then you’ll probably have a better chance of sticking with being a vegetarian.

    no you cant eat fish or stuff with gelitine in it i am vegi add i dont eat that stuff. go to holland and barrat and ask them for advise on what to eat they will help

    You seem a little confused.

    If you become a vegan it means no animal food at all-no meat (including fish and other seafood),no milk,no eggs, no honey and nothing made from any of these things.You should also stop buying leather and other clothes made from animals and cosmetics tested on animals.

    If you are in the UK then yes it is easy to find alternatives.Most supermarkets stock soya and rice alternatives to milk as well as tofu and various vegan meat substitutes.They also sell none-dairy alternatives to butter and margarine.Please note that quorn is not vegan as it contains eggs.Health food shops such as Holland and Barrat stock an even wider range of vegan foods.

    You can also eat any plant food of course-fruit,vegetables,nuts and seeds etc.

    To be honest you seem like someone who needs to do a lot more research before becoming a vegan as it is not something you should become if you are not certain-it takes commitment.

    Most vegans were vegetarians first.I would suggest you take that route too.To become vegetarian you just need to stop eating meat-and yes that includes fish and seafood as they are animals too-and any food containing meat.This still allows you to eat eggs and dairy products and honey.If you enjoy that diet and find it easy to stick to you can then research and decide about being vegan.
