If you are a vegetarian, what were your reasons for becoming one?

I am a veggie, have been for 11 yrs and proud of it. I love animals too much, so believe it is wrong to kill them for their meat. My sister said yesterday she might become a vegetarian too, but for different reasons, because she DOESN’T like animals and hates the thought of eating them! This to me is a totally wrong reason and it annoys me. People who say we need meat, well there are plently of alternatives instead – like Quorn and other soya/protein substitutes, etc.

I’m 17 and have been a vegetarian all my life. I don’t eat meat because like you, I love animals of all kinds. I just wish my family would get it. It’s sick to me to look at, say, a chicken, which I find adorable, and then go KFC and start chomping down on hacked up and batter covered pieces of a dead one. That’s an animal God created to live, and sure, be part of the food chain, but not to be fried in batter, then to have people charge consumers a small fortune to eat it and get fat. I think similarly about all animals people eat, which are all cute and beautiful to me. We don’t NEED meat. When was the last time you herd that someone died from being vegetarian? Of course never, sounds silly. Sure meat is an excellent source of protein, but not the only source of it. Hello, broccoli! And some meat can be diseased, like mad cow, and possibly kill you. I just wish more people would understand what I’ve been talking about for so long. I think your sister’s reason for wanting to become vegetarian is strange, but you should just be glad one more person is converting. Tell her about all the benefits, which there is a lot.

When I was a vegetarian I chose to become one out of protest against the factory farm industry, not only because of how they treat animals but because of how they treat their workers and the disregard many packing plants have for public health and safety standards.

All throughout history, animals eat other animals, but they are more of a luxury food then anything else. Americans eat wayyyy more protein through meats then anybody should. I think it is sad that we actually have cattle farms to farm the meat out of them, but i do still eat meat. Survival of the fittest i guess.
