If I become a vegetarian, will I lose a whole bunch of weight?

I’m thinking of becoming a vegetarian, but I don’t want to lose a lot of weight and become rail thin. I don’t have a great appetite as it is, with all the meat…I don’t want to look like a stick…
imathinker: I want to become a vegetarian but I DON’T want to lose weight. I don’t think you understood the question.

if you keep your calorie intake the same as it was when you were eating meat then you won’t lose weight.just replace meat with other protein rich foods vegetarians eat like nuts and pulses.

  2. Bernie says:

yea you will, you can eat bread and pastas to keep up some weight.

  3. Michael R says:

depends what you eat. you can have fries cooked with vegetable oil and be plump. Veggie lasagna, pasta, shoot theres lots of vegetarian stuff that will keep ur butt squishy. You just need to choose properly.

Becoming a vegetarian is a great option for your health. You might lose a little bit of weight, but it won’t be significant if you still eat enough calories (which isn’t hard to do, trust me, I am a vegetarian). It’s a great option though, I have so much more energy now that I am a vegetarian, just make sure to take a B12 supplement if you go Vegan :) :):)

Just because you don’t eat meat, doesn’t mean you don’t consume calories and fats! This is a retarted question! Do you think cup cakes will make you skinny! Meat is good for you. I’m skinny and fit!

  6. Ronald says:

Not necessarily. Reducing body fat requires expending more calories than you’re taking in. Also known as a caloric deficit. This could be achieved through diet and/or exercise.

  7. TakeaWalk says:

There are fat veggies! I have friends who suck down the french fries and potato chips…whatever! I think you should focus on eating healthy foods whether that includes some meats or not. I for one, eat meat, but not too much.

Vegetarian or not, you still need to make healthy food choices. Do that and you’ll keep a healthy and attractive body weight whether you eat moo cows or not. Twinkies are "vegetarian" but don’t expect to get healthy off of them.

Think hard about why you want to become a vegetarian. If I were you, I’d wean myself off slowly. It might be better that way than going hardcore & cutting meat off like that. Start of slow & see how you feel. Then, if you’re ok, healthy too, then, stick with it.
If you’re thinking that you’re going to lose weight, then, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.

I’ve been a vegetarian for about a year. My weight has gone up and down a little bit but I think that’s normal. Right now i weigh almost exactly what I did a year ago.

The idea of vegetarianism from a health standpoint is that you can live a much healthier life by eating healthier things, and cutting out things that aren’t good for you in the first place (ie. red meat), and that you can still get the nutrients of meat without having to eat meat.

It’s important, when you’re making the switch to vegetarianism to know a bit about nutrition and what your body needs. Take protein for example. It’s really easy for someone to get their complete daily proteins when eating meat, but when it comes to vegetables, it takes a bit of research to know what is in what veggies you are eating.

You will. I became a vegetarian in february and I lost 15lbs without trying. Eating pasta and other things doesn’t help because they fill you up and you get full easier. I’m actually considering giving up the vegetarian thing for this and other reasons I just haven’t completely decided yet.

  14. pinkhamster99 (nWo) says:

It doesn’t matter what you eat, your size is determined by the amount you eat.

Protein is filling and you will lose that element from the diet and thus have greater potential to overeat.

  15. IrishOptimist :) says:

For Gods sake, if you eat properly you won’t become stick thin. Just because you’re eating more vegetables doesn’t mean your going to lose weight. I hardly lost any when I went vegan. Just eat enough whole-grains, pasta, rice, bread and good cooking oils with fruit and veg and whatever else you need.

  16. Abbagail says:

No because if you do it right, you should mantain(unless you need to gain weight)
If you dont have meat rotting inside you, you may have more room for food, and therefore a better appetite

Well maybe just a little bit. It depends how healthy you eat now. If you rarely eat fruits and veggies and all you eat is processed foods and fast food…………then changing to healthy stuff will make you lose weight.

If you already eat healthy, then I wouldn’t worry. As long as you’re eating a well balanced diet loaded with plenty of nutrients, then you should be okay. I remember when I was a kid, I HATED eating the meat my parents cooked. So All I ate was cereal, yogurt, chips and crap. Haha, not good….all it is was empty nourishment. I didn’t lose weight, but I got sick! :D haha.

Eat the same sized portions, just no meat. To make sure you’re getting protein, eat things like beans, mushrooms, and any other produce with protein it it. Can’t think of any others off the top of my head, but you get the idea. XD

It still depends on your diet. Even though, you are vegetarian, maintain a balanced vegetarian diet, and you won’t lose weight like crazy.
