I am thinking about becoming a Vegan, How do I get started?

Here is the situation, I still live with my parents and my parents buy too much junk food. I personally believe that what we put in our bodies can do some good or some bad.
I am 19 yrs old. I never had a job b4. Its like my parents treat me like I can’t do things on my own
Or vegetarian?

Well…I went in stages. First I quit smoking and caffiene. Then I quit a lot of dairy except for hard cheese and chocolate. Then I went on a raw foods diet for a few weeks…then I relapsed ;) Then I quit meat permanently. And now I am vegan, with a strong raw food slant.
This is a good video. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1282796533661048967

It might help persuade your parents…or bug them, lol.

So long as your eating real food, not packaged junk, you’ll probably get what you need. I wouldn’t worry about protein etc. If you have a giant salad everyday, spinach for example is 20% protein, and most leafy greens are close which is more than ample….and they are also chalk FULL of nutrients. The trick is to eat a lot of it, since 20% still isnt’ much since it’s calorically low. But you can add nuts seeds, avocados etc, but be careful as they are high in fat.

You can make lots of great dressings with avocado, fruit or salsa…and on and on.
Eat lots of fruit. The fresh kind.

They way I see it, you’ll either do it gradually, in phases, like I did, or you’ll jump in ‘cold turkey’ ….haha sorry for the pun! But it may take days, or months or years. Depends how you are with changes I guess.

Listen to your body after you eat certain foods…how do they make you feel? That really helps too.

Maybe don’t even confront your parents about it, just ask them for more fruit and veggies. Tell them you want to try this salad recipe or whatever.

Explain this to your parents. They don’t have to become vegan or vegetarian but they can benifit from the change in eating habits as well. It may be easier for you to start of vegetarian and slowly become vegan. Its hard to start of being a vegan and not being able to eat anything at all that comes from an animal, including milk and cheese. Good Luck!

I am not sure what age you are, but if you can afford to do so, you may want to purchase your own food. I had to do that sometimes when I lived at home. I became a vegetarian at 13, but luckily my parents were quite supportive. You may want to check out some websites for more information:

First thing you do is, you open your skull and throw away your brain! Or, you might buy a good textbook on nutrition and learn how best to eat healthy. Despite all the wild claims to the contrary, veganism is NOT way healthier than a balanced diet that includes ALL the food groups.

What you have to understand is that lots of junk food is vegetarian and vegan. It is really hard to just switch over if you don’t educated yourself first.

You need to do some research, find out what exactly you will be eating, where you will get all the nutrients you need. Try cutting out certain foods you know are bad for you that are in your house. Talk to your parents. Going full force without having the proper tools won’t workout, be smart about it.

And your 19?!Been there, done that.K.You can explain to your parent what you want to do.They don’t have to go with it.Just vegetables I guess. What we put in our bodies does matter. But the body also needs protein.I’d say do your homework and do whats best for you.
