When you’re sick, it can often be very hard to stay vegan, as many of the generic remedies on the market are not marketed to vegans. When you’re coughing up a lung or have unending heartburn, you just want to feel better without worrying whether you’re swallowing cow hooves.
Supplements can be just as bad. Often, people who are taking supplements are deficient in a particular vitamin for a reason and need to take pills to either prevent a condition or relieve it. Vegans are recommended to take supplements because of the vitamins they don’t get in their daily diet compared to a non-vegan diet.
In the store looking for probiotics yesterday, there were only three brands (out of a lot) that were non-dairy, and one that was vegetarian (i.e. did not use gelatin capsules or any other animal product). If a supplement company is vegetarian, it will normally go out of its way to say it on the label. If the word “vegetarian” is not easy to find, it is probably not vegetarian nor vegan.
Things to watch out for in the ingredients of vitamins, medicines and supplements:
Gelatin capsules
Anything that says whey or milk
Glycerin
Casein
Mono and di-glycerides

There are so many vegan supplements out there today! Just take advantage of them and you and your body will probably be better off. A friend told me about Alive! the other day and prompted this article. This product has so many people raving about it, I’m surprised I haven’t ‘become Alive!’ too. The exclamation is a definite selling point, if the thousands of vitamins and nutrients on the label don’t get you. In reading the label it looks good, though I’m not sure where the amino acids come from. I’m open to information anyone has on the subject.
Ask your pharmacist next time you go to read you the labels of what he is giving you. Chances are if you ask for a product that is not animal-derived, they can find you one.
Moral of the story: When it’s bad, feel free to just do what you have to do to feel better. But in the meantime, do some research and stock up on vitamins, medicines and supplements that make you feel better physically as well as emotionally. Next time you reach for those painkillers for your headache, you’ll have a vegan supply ready.
