I’m vegetarian and have a strong feeling that we should all be treated equally as far as humans and animals go, I also want to help out in any way I can to stop animal cruelty in factory farms etc. I love animals so much, I think people may think I’m crazy? Does anyone feel the same, or am i the only one?
Thanks so much for all your answers, its great to hear other peoples opinions!

I can respect other people’s choice to go vegetarian, but, I never will. My dogs and cats eat meat, so do I. We also aren’t the only creature to farm other animals for animal products. Ants for instance, farm and milk aphids.
It comes down to respect for other people’s beliefs. Peta subtly is trying to make it impossible for those of us that still want to eat meat to do so. They pass legislation that looks like it’s good for the animals, but, it has no leeway to make it possible for farmers to still grow animals without most of them dying. For instance, the complete gestation/farrowing crate ban in Florida. I understand limiting the amount of time a sow can be in one, that makes sense. But, banning them entirely means the sow crushes her litter to death making pig raising impossible. There are few pork farms left in Florida..
The way I see it, I’m not trying to pass legislation to make it illegal to be vegetarian. I’m not banning soy.
Animals don’t treat other species equally. Wolves that in general won’t kill their own kind, will kill a deer or rabbit with relish. Certain animals reproduce at alarming rates to make up for the number of them that will be eaten.
I agree with treating them as humanely as possible while still making raising meat a viable option for those of us that want to live more naturally. An omnivore diet is the natural diet for human beings. No other animal will sacrifice their well being to avoid eating another animal. I prefer to follow their code of ethics rather then one dreamed up by other human beings.
Hi I am Katie and I want to tell you that you are not the only one! I have been a vegetarian since I was 6 years old. So I haven’t eaten meat for 8 years. I think we should be pen pals. have a lot of ideas about protest and other things to help animals.
I am by no means a vegetarian, vegan or otherwise non meat eating person.
I would be happier if I knew animals really were kept like the cows in the Happy Cows Come From California Ad. (Which I hate!- talk about false advertising!)
Sadly, I cannot afford to buy meat from places such as whole foods etc… and until it becomes cheaper to raise and treat them right than to factory farm them, it wont happen.
I am also a vegetarian. I also think animal cruelty should be stopped. The answer is not to eliminate animals from human service, however, which is how many peta types feel. Education is of paramount importance. Join a kennel club, get involved in community education. Attend dog shows, find the education booths set up at most shows, ask how you can help. Also get involved in anti BSL groups. Stop the insane banning of pets when its the people who are to blame!!
Good for you on wanting to make a difference.
i personally believe that humans and animals are not equal, but that animals should still be treated with great respect. i believe that they were put on this earth for us to develop a bond with, and also to eat if we so desire. but i think if you are going to eat an animal, make sure the animal is in sanitary conditions its whole life, fed and given water every day, and killed as humanely as possible.
but being a vegetarian is all a matter of personal opinion the way i see it.
it makes me sad and happy in a good way
Well, there are a lot of people on both sides of the fence so to say. I personally think that animal cruelty is horrible (michael vick anyone?).
However, when it comes to eating meat (especially farm raised meat such as chickens, cows or pigs) I believe that eating meat is perfectly acceptable from a moral point of view. Think of it this way, had the animals never been raised for the sole purpose of being eaten as meat, they never would have existed at all.
Also, the level of intelligence for animals that are raised as meat to be eaten is extremely low, chickens, cows, and pigs have very little intelligence at all.
Nothing against vegetarians, its a much healthier lifestyle, but I like my meat…

I, too, am a veggie. I cook chicken for my husband and daughter – but no red meat. I can’t eat chicken – when I was 4 years old my mother took me to a slaughter house, and I have been a veggie since. I wish everything were perfect for animals. I take care of feral animals. I just took the female cat in to be spayed ($190) out of my pocket. She is living in my guest bathroom while she heals. I don’t know how to stop animal cruelty. But, good for you for caring and trying.
if you choose to be a veggie that is your choice, i have no problem with it. However, if you are so due to the "saving face" thing, here are some thoughts . . . Horses are used to make plastic, do you use plastic?
All of the animals that we eat are bred specifically for that purpose, and in most cases they are treated pretty well (w/ the obvious exception of veal, which is just wrong).
I think that everyone should have the right to make their own choice and not be accosted for it either way.
you have a tough road to travel
getting ppl to eat more healthy is near impossible.
getting them to stop eating animals like cows and chicken
ain’t going to happen
maybe if ppl were exposed to the terrible conditions they might change a little but it’s doubtful.
ppl are just too set in theirs ways

I agree with you in every way. I have been a veggie since I was 9 yrs old ( I read leaflets about the barbaric treatment of farm animals and I converted instantly). I am now nearly 30. I believe meat should be banned. Animals are not on this world so we can eat and abuse them in the cruel and nasty conditions that they are kept. Then they are often abused by nasty people on the way to the slaughter house where humane is the oppisite of what goes on inside one of those evil places. It is sooo wrong. These days there are so many alternatives to meat that killing animals for food is not only evil cruel sad but it’s pointless too.
Every time I see a poor bull, sheep etc in the field I feel sad as I know that it’s going to die in agony. And what about all those big barns you see? Filled to the brim with factory farmed animals in cramped cages unable to move. And those Sow pens are the worst. Poor thing gives birth then she is pinned down unable to move at all. The subject makes me ill. I am proud to be a veggie. I converted my husband to it too after just a week of meeting him 11 years ago.
I love animals so much too. We should not eat them and they should not be used and abused in circuses or used in scientist labs.
What about the japanese whalers? And the evil slaughter of dolphins that they do.
Koreans and Chinese skinning, boiling dogs alive.
People going out to pay £20K to kill polar bears ‘for fun’.
Harp seal cubs being clubbed to death.
Even fishing. All those poor fish killed. No thoughts are with them from most people.
The list goes on and on and on!
I hate it. Animals should have so much more rights than they get. Just imagine what goes on behind closed doors that we don’t even know about. Poor bloomin animals! I hope there is a heaven where they go up and then are happy after they die.
Ban animal abuse and ban the meat industry!!!!
As far as what Alcorr said. If people didn’t eat meat you are right the farm animals wouldn’t exsist. But at least they wouldn’t be kept in a small cruel cage and then slaughtered in the most dreadful way imaginable at just a few weeks/months old. That’s NO life. Stop trying to make out that eating animals is doing them a favour. I would rather never exsist than be born into the evil meat industry! And if they never exsisted then they wouldn’t have ever been killed to be eaten. It’s Far better to never be alive than it is to be alive, farmed then slaughtered in agony to feed selfish people who don’t care!
Well, I’m a vegan but my animals aren’t,but i do make sure that my pets eat only free range. As another person suggested a good place to look is compassion in world farming.
Find out all you can on the subjects of farming practices, vivisection, fur farming etc and then make your own mind up on exactly what you want to do,but for Heaven’s sake do not try going vegan over night without studying the subject and what food you need to stay healthy, should you decide to take it that far.
I’ve been vegetarian for over 40 years and vegan 25 and am on the whole at least as healthy as other folks in my age group, but i do know of people who have made themselves pretty poorly by skrewing up their dietry needs.
