I know several people who are vegetarians and they seem to be extremely healthy. I would like to try to become a vegetarian, for health reasons and the fact that it can make you lose weight. I like most fruits and veggies, but my entire life I have been eating meat. Chicken, beef, fish, liver mush, bacon etc. Has anyone here been a total carnivore and then did a complete 180 to a vegetarian? And also could you list some pros and cons of vegetarianism? My mom did this exact same thing. She gave up meat last year as her resolution and it’s been over a year since she’s eaten meat. I’m not sure how she does it because my dad, sister and I still eat it on a regular basis. She says she doesn’t miss it because there are so many other food options and meat replacements. She has a lot of the Boca products.
I would suggest that you limit yourself to just chicken at first, because that’s hard for most people to give up. Then start to substitute the chicken with tofu and protein and gradually go from there.
Man is meant to eat meat. Everyone needs meat in their diet.
well i’m not as old as you, but i was definitely a meat eater before i became vegetarian. but, i did it for ethical reasons.
do it gradually and don’t get too mad at yourself if you slip and eat meat. i did a thing where i had a goal to eat vegetarian at least three days out of the week. i would mark the vegetarian days on my calendar. once i met that goal, it would be 4 days out of the week, then 5, then 6, then 7. and that’s the whole week.
vegetarianism definitely gives you awareness about what you’re putting into your body, how it affects the rest of the world, and how it affects your personal health. it’s really great. the only con is that it’s difficult at first to resist the taste. but you get used to it. i’ve been a vegetarian now for over 2 years and by now meat barely looks good to me. it’s so much easier once you’re used to it.
I ate meat for 29 years before I went vegetarian. I’ve not eaten meat for almost 8 years. We went cold turkey and it was not difficult after the first week or so.
Just remember there are a LOT of vegetarian junk foods and that being a vegetarian doesn’t guarantee that you will lose weight.
Pros:
Healthier eating, better for you and animals. More energy. Less expensive than eating meat (also, the health benefits mean less money spent on health care).
Cons:
Misguided people constantly wondering where you will get your protein (most people eat too much protein).
Other misguided people trying to tempt you into eating meat or saying that God intended for us to eat other animals.
And if you think you will miss the taste of meat–try to find "Quorn" brand products and Gardenburger BBQ riblets. Absolutely fantastic

Being Vegetarian has countless benefits, but the biggest ones for most people are to reduce animal suffering, help the environment and to be healthier. No one can tell you what to be, only you can decide that for yourself.

Also, you should know that being Vegetarian can help you lose weight but it’s not a long term weight loss solution, especially since most vegetarian diets are still high in fat because a lot of vegetarians still eat cheese, butter, etc. so it is important to still watch what you eat when you’re a vegetarian.
I was an omnivore when I was little but my system never really tolerated meat or dairy. ( I’m allergic to eggs and lactose intolerant anyway ) and I love animals so for me being Vegan was just a natural choice. I hope this helps you and don’t give up!

After eating a lot of meat and dairy and pastries all my life I decided to change for health reasons. I was only about 20 lbs more than I should have been, but I was waking up every morning aching. My knees especially hurt.
I started right off being a vegan and that wasnt easy. This was 19 years ago and since then I have adapted what is best for me. A great book to read to get you started and motivated is 12 Days To Dynamic Health by Dr. John McDougall. A great book to read.
I do know people who eat a lot of meat (organic, grass fed) and run 15 miles per day and are very healthy. I think everyone is different, but the bottom line is, if you dont feel very good health wise, than its most likely what you’re eating.
