    My mother-in-law purchased this book because I’m vegan and her son eats gluten free and she wanted to be able to cook for us. The two recipes we were served, the lentil dahl and the cranberry apple tart, were FABULOUS. I’d love to be able to give this book a 5 star review, based on those two recipes alone. But I can’t.

    Many of the recipes call for honey. Honey isn’t vegan; vegans by definition do not eat honey. Vegans know this and while it’s annoying, can easily sub agave nectar and similar in these recipes. But people like my mother-in-law, trusting this book to guide her how to cook for us, could have inadvertantly made any of the recipes that include honey. She was shocked when I explained to her that vegans do not, in fact, eat honey. She felt deceived, since it says “vegan” right there on the cover.

    I know that the consumption of honey is a controversial topic; some otherwise vegans will eat it; some won’t. But all vegans know of this controversy, so my main issue with the book is not at least noting this issue and flagging recipes that are not, in fact, vegan at all.

    I’m urging my mother-in-law to send this book back and get something different.

    As a gluten-free recipe book, this one is stellar. As a vegan cookbook? don’t bother.

  3. The cookbook is very nice and features not only baked goods, but also some main (“Hearty”) dishes. Some of the baked goods have photographs (VERY NICE!!!) and the main dishes (maybe there are 15 – 20 recipes) have no photos.

    I tried a couple of the baked goods and was pleased with what I made–the apricot thumbprint cookies were quite good as were maple berry muffins. I also made the Cinnamon Raisin Pecan bread–I had to cook it a bit longer than the instructions said in the cookbook, but it came out quite nice!

    My objection to any vegan cookbook is when they include non-vegan recipes–and since honey is not nor has ever been considered vegan, I have a problem with some of the recipes–such as the hazelnut honey cookies, the honey cornmeal cake or the almond pie crust made with honey…and there are a couple of other recipes that call for honey….NOT COOL.

    I would have given the cookbook four stars if it were not for that…this is a much better cookbook than Babycakes…for all interested and I recommend it!

    Here is the email I’ve sent to Flying Apron, thanking them for this book – which has made me so HAPPY!

    I just wanted to put out a HUGE thank you to everyone involved in Flying Apron’s cookbook! I’m sure you’ve heard tons of stories like mine… I’ve just been diagnosed as gluten intolerant by genetic testing (!) and LOVE breads and pastries. To make matters worse, I’ve found out I’m having auto immune reactions to dairy, soy and eggs…

    I LOVE to cook. I’m pretty fantastic – so I’m told… and I never follow recipes… I can’t, they just never come out as good as if I’d just done it with intuition. So, dealing with this new paradigm has been excessively draining and depressing for me. I ordered several allergy-free cookbooks hoping for some inspiration…

    Your book is exactly the motivation, and inspiration I was needing! It has everything! I’m throwing out all my other cookbooks, as I can’t eat from them anymore… and I only ever used them for ideas anyway… I will be buying copies in the future for all of my gluten/allergy free friends – to be certain!

    I just wanted you to know how grateful my family is that we are going to be eating home-cooking again! They’d pretty much tired of steamed veggies and quinoa and I can’t wait to make all of the amazing things in your book! Beyond that, your book has really been a psychological boon for me… not just making cooking and eating possible again, but normalizing and even glorifying gluten/allergy free eating. It’s fantastic the way everything is so beautifully presented, and thoughtfully formulated. The flavors and varieties expressed in this one little tome are so fantastic! I just REALLY, really appreciate that you’ve created such delicacies and that you’ve taken the time to put them in a format that is accessible for people like me! THANK YOU! :) If I’m ever in Seattle, I’ll be stopping in, for sure! :) AM

  5. so far i’m very pleased and can’t wait to try the recipes. i’m very surprised to also find savory entree recipes in there- even gnocchi! some people mentioned the honey issue, but there is maybe 4 or 5 recipes with honey listed IN THE WHOLE BOOK. you can easily substitute the honey with another liquid sweetner of your liking.there is even a honey substitute out there. overall i think it’s worth checking out and a great addition to my cookbook collection. the curried vegetable pockets are awesome! that recipe was really 2 in one because you had to make the everyday bread which is also used to make pizza dough. the bread is very very good. the filling itself is great by itself. i’m so glad i bought this book.
