Eating vegetarian in not-so-vegetarian places

It can be difficult being a vegetarian in a city that doesn’t cater to the vegetarian lifestyle as much as one would hope. But with a little inquisitive hunting, a whole world of vegetarian eating can be found in any city and in almost any restaurant. Having been in that situation years ago, it seemed fitting to post a few of the lesser-known vegetarian items to order around the Cincinnati area. Hopefully this can help out fellow vegetarians who find themselves starving at a baseball game or famished at the Cincinnati Zoo. Listed below are just a few favorites, but feel free to leave a comment with your own ideas and experiences. We’d all be happy to learn some more tips on where to eat out!

The Great American Ball Park

The ball park has many hot dog vendors, but a select few serve veggie dogs. They keep them off the grill and away from the meat-dogs, so no meat juice to worry about. The major downfall is they charge $4.50 a pop, but it’s worth it to keep up with the tradition of eating a hot dog at a baseball game!
Skyline Chili

Skyline isn’t just for Cincinnati chili lovers; Skyline is a bean-lover’s dream come true! They can make any of their signature dishes ‘veggie-style’ by substituting the chili for their black beans and rice. Sounds a little odd having black beans and rice on top of spaghetti, but just try it and you’ll be a believer! My personal favorite menu item? Veggie sandwiches with onions and mustard. Be warned…they’re addicting.
Frisch’s Big Boy

Granted there is always the salad bar, but here’s an idea that always makes the waiter/waitress give some real funny looks. Order a Brawny Lad without the lad (no meat). Ask for a slice of Swiss cheese instead and make sure they include that big hunk o’ onion on the rye bun. It really makes for a delicious sandwich, and it’s always fun to get the “Are you nuts?” look from the staff.
Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden

Granted there is always controversy among vegetarians and vegans alike about going to the zoo, but for those who do, the CZBG has finally opened a new restaurant that serves a vegetarian selection that isn’t pizza. Located right inside the new Vine Street entrance, the Natural Selections Café serves oven-baked sandwiches made with locally-grown produce. The price is high, but that’s unfortunately the norm these days.
McDonald’s

Yeah, yeah…it’s usually just a ‘no’ on every vegetarian’s list of places to eat. But if you find yourself in the middle of nowhere and the only place to eat is McD’s (which is usually the case as they are everywhere), order a cheese burger without the meat. Depending on the location, you’ll get a really weird look and then the cashier will ask for help. Chances are good you’ll get meat on your burger the first time around, but kindly return it and ask for a bun with cheese, ketchup, onions and pickles. People don’t often understand “everything but the meat” for some reason.

A few burger joints that offer a vegetarian option (usually a garden burger) include Denny’s, Red Robin, and Burger King. Undoubtedly there are a million others in the world, so again feel free to share with the rest of us from your own personal experience by leaving a comment with your own insight. Happy vegetarian eating!
