Could a dog survive on a vegetarian diet?
Well, I’m sure they could survive, but could they survive and be healthy?
I read somewhere a dog can live perfectly happily on a vegetarian diet but a cat can’t.
Is it true?
By the way, I wasn’t thinking of trying it. My dog eats meat.

it’s really not all that appropriate to impose a human’s food philosophy on an animal. but just like with a doctor, it’s always a good idea to get the recommendation of a veterinarian. (my vet friend tells me stories of people bringing in sickly cats because their owners decided to give them vegan diets…facepalm)

It would not be healthy for them. Humans can do well on vegetarian diets because we evolves with a primarily non-animal based diet. Dogs need a primarily meat based diet.

Yes, that is true.
I buy vegetarian food for my dogs. High quality stuff. There’s actually more nutrients in it than in many commercial meaty dog biscuits. Half of them have more bone and beak than meat in them.
However, puppies, I feed meat. Real meat, not any commercialised stuff. I don’t want to take any risks with the growing animals.

Yes, the dog will be perfectly healthy.. In fact a lot of dogs are now on vegetarian diet as they are allergic to a lot of meat. A lot of dog foods of vegetarian source are now being sold in the market.

It is possible however it takes a lot of research and balancing of nutrients and analying if certain foods are toxic. I’m a vegetarian but my dogs are not. However I did find a website with an interesting study that I used for my statistics class. It states that 90% of the dogs in a study that were vegetarian were completley healthy and 100% of the dogs who ate a vegan diet were completely healthy. So it is possible.

Yes, dogs can tolerate vegetarian diets long term because they can manufacture all the proteins they need from amino acids in various non-animal products. Whether they do well on these diets is another matter, but that has more to do with the proportions of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in the diet they’re given.
Cats on the other hand, cannot produce taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, vitamin B12 and thiamine from non-animal foods. These nutrients are vital to many organ systems and they get very sick if they are deficient in any of them. It’s possible to feed them a vegetarian diet and supplement all the above nutrients with manufactured ones, but it’s difficult to do correctly, inconvenient and the products are often made from meat anyway!
